Game-Changing Innovations for Steering Applications

A standout product in CCTY’s lineup is the Square Ball Universal Joint® (SBJ), designed specifically for steering applications up to 45 degrees. Initially successful in the construction sector, this innovative product is now being introduced to the trucking industry, where it is already testing well in the off-road recreational market.

Several key features of CCTY’s Square Ball Universal Joint include:

  • Elimination of Fretting Issues: Traditional heavy truck steering universal joints begin to suffer from fretting—a degradation caused by vibration—at around 250,000 miles. The SBJ’s large contact area between bearing surfaces prevents fretting, eliminating this common failure mode.
  • Smoother Steering: The distinctive square ball design provides a smoother steering experience, making it ideal for side-by-side vehicles, golf carts, forklifts, trucks and more.
  • Simple, Intelligent Design: With just eight components compared to the 70-100 found in traditional steering u-joints, the SBJ is both simply and intelligently designed for use in more demanding environments. Its boot seal design holds grease near the bearing surfaces and protects moving components from water and other contaminants—achieving an IP68 rating.
  • Patented & Tested: Not only is the SBJ’s design already patented, but it is currently undergoing rigorous, real-world testing by a luxury, high-performance supercar manufacturer—highlighting its promising potential for use across broader automotive applications in the near future.

In addition to the SBJ, CCTY has developed a constant velocity joint (CVJ) for steering applications, which has shown promising initial results. The CVJ is designed to eliminate the need for truck owners to replace their steering joints every 250,000 miles—allowing them to last the lifetime of the truck.

The CVJ is particularly well suited for higher-angle applications up to 50 degrees. In certain instances, both the SBJ and CVJ can be used on the same steering shaft assemblies—offering unparalleled flexibility and performance.
